Whether it be Goldfish or Tropical fish, an aquarium is one of the most relaxing and therapeutic hobbies.
Fish can can housed in anything from brandy snifters to custom made aquarium units.
All natural environments can be easily set up with sand, crushed oyster shell or coral (not recommended for fresh water), aquarium gravel or pebbles, rocks, live aquatic plants, driftwood and lighting.
Filtration has never been so easy. Although corner or box filters are still on the market, they are the dinosaur of filtration. Biological (under gravel) & Mechanical (power) filters have taken their place. Power Heads have replaced the need for air pumps with under gravel filters, drawing more water, hence, better filtration.
Aquarium Tips
- Locate your new aquarium away from direct sunlight to discourage algae growth in the water.
- Always add a water conditioner ( Aqua Plus, Aqua Safe, Prime, Stress Coat...) to treated tap water before putting it in your aquarium. A water conditioner neutralizes or eliminates chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals.
- Maintain the right aquarium temperature with a heater.
- Choose a Power Filter that best suits the size of your aquarium.
- Add only a few fish initially.
- Use plastic or silk plants in your aquarium if you prefer a low maintenance alternative to live plants.
- Feed only small amounts daily. Un-eaten food will sink to the bottom and start to rot.
- Remember to do partial water changes every 2 - 4 weeks.
- Use a gravel cleaner to siphon debris without disturbing aquarium decor or needing to remove fish.
- Rinse filter cartridges out weekly and replace every 6 - 8 weeks.
- Don't tap on the glass!! This may send fish into shock or cause them to jump out.
