Planning your Water Garden
Situate your pond where you
will most enjoy it! A minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day is recommended,
but not to worry if there is a little more or less. More sun means more
algae and lots of blooms, and too little means greener plants, not as many
blooms. Ponds can also be shaded with floating plants such as water hyacinth,
water lettuce and lilies.
Above-ground or in-ground ponds should be situated on fairly even ground.
Do not place your pond directly under the trees. This only leads to excessive
cleaning and water problems. The roots from the trees will also grow towards
the pond, eventually cracking pre-forms or tearing through your pond liner.
Whiskey barrels can be lined to create smaller water gardens for decks.
